Die Vegetationskarte Europas stellt weltweit die erste von einem internationalen Expertenteam erarbeitete Karte dieser Art dar. Sie wurde nach gemeinsam entwickelten Prinzipien geschaffen und gibt den aktuellen Wissenstand in Europa wieder.

The German Explanatory text contains introductory chapters on the evolution and accomplishment of the mapping project, on its scientific foundations (the vegetation maps, the geophysical, climatic and phytogeographical divisions, and the postglacial history of the vegetation of Europe) and on the overall theoretical concept.
