Gene loci (Rb1, N-myc, p53) and chromosomes (6, 13, X and others) were studied in selected human tumour cells. Fresh tissue or paraffin-embedded sections were used for chromatin analyses. Heterogeneity in the copy number of genetic elements was found in tumour cells and lymphocytes of the patients with diagnosed retinoblastoma. Our findings support an assertion that structural and functional modifications of chromatin are an important feature of carcinogenesis.
