The paper presents results of the sensitivity of xerogel layers applied onto optical fibers to toluene dissolved in water. Results achieved with several types of xerogel materials based on tetraethoxisilane, methyltriethoxisilane, phenyltriethoxisilane are presented in the paper. It is shown that best results can be achieved with the layers based on methyltriethoxisilane. A minimum concentration of several mg/m3 can be achieved with this type of the detection layer.
