Since the first experiments of Wilson who used a cloud chamber as a sensitive tool for detecting high energy radiation the condensation on ions found increasing interest. The first theoretical interpretation of ion-induced nucleation stems from Volmer and independently from Frenkel. They modified the classical nucleatin theory by using the electrostatic energy of a charged spherical droplet as an additional therm in the free energy of the nucleus formation.

Zájem o kondenzaci na iontech roste od doby, kdy Wilson použil ve svých pionýrských experimentech mlžnou komoru jako citlivý detektor částic o vysoké energii. První teoretické interpretace nukleace indukované ionty pocházejí od Volmera a nezávisle na něm od Frenkela. Ti modifikovali klasickou teorii nukleace, když do vztahu pro volnou energii vznikajícího zárodku přidali člen obsahující elektrostatickou energii nabité kulové kapky.
