294 Planeta Země je proměnlivá. Změny často nemohou být správně pochopeny v perspektivě času vnímaného lidskou zkušeností. V rámci geologického času jsou nejvýznamnějšími taktory změn vnitrozemské vlivy (impakty), souběžné proudění a tavení v zemském plášti, účinky hadrosféry, biosféry a atmosféry. Aby byly tyto jevy správně pochopeny, geologové vyvinuli řadu speciálních laboratorních metod a naučili se spolupracovat s fyziky, chemiky, biology a matematiky.

Earth is a permanently changing planet. The changes, however, cannot be understood well from a human time perspective. In the realm of geologic time, extraterrestrial influences, convection and meeting processes in the mantle, effect of hydrosphere, biosphere and atmosphere on the Earth body are responsible for the present look of our planet. To study these phenomena, geologists have developed numerous special methods and learned to co-operate with physicists, chemists, biologists, and mathematicians.
