Zatímco vlastnosti svrchní zemské kůry je možné přímo sledovat pomocí geologického průzkumu, její hlubší části a celý zemský plášť jsou zatím pro přímé pozorování nedosažitelné a mnoho informací o jejich složení a struktuře je odvozováno z refrakčních, reflexních a tomografických seismických měření.
Seismic properties of the rocks from deeper parts of the Earth, which were altered during their uplift, can only be reconstructed using relicts of primary phases and elastic mixture rules. In this paper basic methods for calculation of seismic properties from data on crystallographic orientation of individual mineral phases and their elastic constants are described.
