The genus Pangio is one of the largest of the family Cobitidae. Four species groups were recognised within the genus. In other taxonomic concepts, two species were considered to represent different genera. Our phylogeny of the genus Pangio constructed on the base of mitochondrial and nuclear sequence data shows that the natural diversity of the genus Pangio is more complex and that none of the supposed taxonomic hypotheses explain it.

Pangio je v rámci čeledi Cobitidae jedním z druhově nejbohatších rodů. Druhy tohoto rodu byly dříve tříděny do 4 skupin. V jiném taxonomickém pojetí byly dva druhy dokonce považovány za dva další rody. Rekonstrukce fylogenetických vztahů uvnitř rodu Pangio na základě sekvencí mitochondriálních a jaderných genů (která byla přemětem této studie) ukazuje, že diversita tohoto rodu je mnohem komplexnější než předpokládaly dřívější taxonomické hypotézy.
