We show that current tests of mechanisms explaining the long-term disadvantages of asexuality, which are based on phylogenetic information, lack testing against proper Null Hypothesis. Furthermore, phylogenetic patterns typically observed in asexual complexes may also result from neutral process without assumption of time-dependent fitness decay of clonal lineages. As such, data published so far do not tell us anything about the role of selection in maintaining the sex in nature.

Ukázali jsme, že dosavadní testy hypotéz o dlouhodobé nevýhodnosti asexuality, které byly založeny na fylogenetických datech, nepoužívají správnou nulovou hypotézu. Navíc jsme dokázali, že struktura fylogenetických vztahů běžně pozorovaná v asexuálních komplexech může vziknout i neutrálním procesem bez postupného snižování zdatnosti starých klonálních linií. Dosavadní data nám tedy nevypovídají nic o roli selekce v zachování sexuálního rozmnožování.
