Fine-scale phylogeographical study of two loach fishes suggest that the small, cold-adapted species with preference for mountain habitats exhibit high divergence and provide evidence of multiple populations with a history of long-term persistence and separation within the Danube River. They have maintained their population identity, despite the strong disturbance caused by the Quaternary glacial cycles. In contrast, the species confined to the lowlands, revealed the lack of profound genealogical divergence within this river system, and indicated the recent colonization of this area from a single or few glacial refugia.

Podrobná fylogeografická štúdia druhov Brabatula barbatula a Cobitis elongatoides ukázala, že chladnomilné druhy rýb, uprednostňujúce horský habitat, vykazujú vysokú divergenciu, čo naznačuje prítomnosť viacerých populácií s dlhodobou históriou a separáciou v rámci Dunajského systému. Svoju populačnú identitu si zachovali aj napriek silnému vplyvu glaciálnych cyklov. Naopak, druhy uprednostňujúce nížinné prostredie sa ukázali byť málo divergentné, čo naznačuje recentnú kolonizáciu tohto riečneho systému z jedného, prípadne zopár glaciálnych refúgií.
