Studie se zabývá vývojem výzkumů raně středověkých aglomerací a institucionálních měst na Moravě a ve Slezsku. Při množství terénních výzkumů, narůstajících po r. 1990 se zpožďuje jejich vyhodnocení. Podstatná část práce se zabývá formováním areálů měst, zčásti na základě jejich raně středověkých předchůdců, s důrazem na období 13. – 14. století. Pozornost je věnována utváření půdorysu, parcelaci a struktuře parcelní zástavby včetně obytných staveb, sanitárních zařízení a výrobních objektů. V závěru je řešena také úprava komunikací a veřejných prostor. Klíčovým tématem je tedy organizace prostoru v prvním století života středověkých měst jako výrazný civilizační fenomén, na nějž v mnoha směrech kontinuitně navazuje i naše současnost.

The first part of the study centres upon the development of archaeological research of the early-medieval conurbations and institutional towns in Moravia and Czech Silesia. It underlines the developmentof field research after 1900 the theoretical asessment of which lags behind. The main part of the study focuses on the constitution of town areas, partially based on early-medieval foundations, with emphasis on the 13th – 14 th centuries. Special attention is devoted to the forming of the layout , land subdivison and structure of the built-up area including residential buildings, sanitary facilities and production quarters. The final section touches upon the issue of adjustment of communications and public spaces. The key thema is the organization of the space in the first century of the medieval towns-life as the strong phenomenon with the continuous development to the present.
