The ability to form multicellular communities (colonies) helps yeast to survive deleterious environmental attack. The defence strategies against this attack include: 1) formation of extracellular matrix protecting the community 2) induction of adaptive metabolism enabling escape of population from cumulating stress and 3) differentiation of cells in colonies enabling localised regulated apoptosis-like cell death of part of the population providing thus nutrients to remaining healthy cells
Skutečnost, že kvasinky mohou tvořit mnohobuněčné kolonie, jim pomáhá přežít v nepříznivých podmínkách prostředí. Obranné strategie umožňující toto přežití zahrnují: 1) tvorbu extracelulární matrix chránící kolonii, 2) indukci adaptivního metabolismu spouštěného amoniakovou signalizací umožňujícího populaci kolonie uniknout rostoucímu stresu a 3) diferenciaci buněk v kolonii umožňující lokalizované apoptotické odumírání části buněk, což poskytne živiny pro zbylé zdravé buňky
