Carvedilol is a beta-adrenoceptor antagonist used in the treatment of hypertension. Carvedilol also reduces oxidative stress, which causes cellular damage. To investigate if the protective/beneficial effects of Carvedilol involves modulation of respiratory burst, and the effect on superoxide anion (O2-) production and the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) expression in ischemia-reperfused livers when added to the University of wisconsin preservation solution. The reduction of oxidative burst by Carvedilol and the effect on NOS indicate a potential beneficial effect of carvedilol when supplemented to the University of Wisconsin solution used for donor livers preservation.
