This special issue publishes selected refereed papers from symposia JSII02 “Long-term Trends in the Upper Mesosphere” and JSMA03 “Short-term Variability and Long-term Changes in the Lower and Middle Atmosphere”, held during the 10th Scientific Assembly of IAGA, Toulouse, France, 18-29 July 2005. Most of papers deal with long-term trends in the atmosphere-ionosphere system. Remaining papers treat short-term changes and variability, and related problems.

Toto speciální číslo publikuje vybrané recenzované články ze symposií JSII02 “Long-term Trends in the Upper Mesosphere” a JSMA03 “Short-term Variability and Long-term Changes in the Lower and Middle Atmosphere”, které se konaly během 10. kongresu IAGA, Toulouse, Francie, 18.-29.7.2005. Většina článků se zabývá dlouhodobými trendy v systému atmosféra-ionosféra. Zbývající články pojednávají o krátkodobých změnách a variabilitě a s tím spojených problémech.
