The goal of the workshop was to bring together both scientists and students working in the fields of observational and theoretical seismology, tectonics, mineral physics, and experimental petrology to discuss mainly the following topics: Scales of mantle heterogeneity and anisotropy, regional and global studies mantle deformation seen by seismic anisotropy measurements, models of anisotropic mantle fabrics resulting from ancient and recent processes, constraints from textures in xenoliths and exposed mantle sections, mechanical interactions between the lithosphere and asthenosphere.

Cílem konference bylo shromáždění vědců i studentů zabývajících se observatorní i teoretickou seismologií, tektonikou, fyzikou minerálů a hornin, experimentální petrologií. Na konferenci byly diskutovány problémy týkající se zejména: regionálních i globálních studií heterogenit a anizotropie plášťě, modelováním deformace pláště, tak jak se jeví v seismické anizotropii, modely stavby pláště vyplývající ze geologicky starých i současných procesů, interakce mezi litosférou a astenosférou.
