We present the variability of the phase shift between blood pressure (BP) and heart rate fluctuation as an important marker in the assessment of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. We tested this parameter together with other commonly used parameters on four groups of subjects: young healthy individuals, old healthy individuals, patients with essential hypertension, and patients with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). The variability of the phase shift between SBP and R-R (RR) intervals was analyzed in graphical form (instantaneous phase shift) and numerically (standard deviation of instantaneous phase shift). Statistically significant differences exist between the ICD and other groups in the variability of the phase shift. With BRS differences occur only at 0.1 Hz respiration. The variability of the phase shift between BP and RR intervals in the area around 0.1 Hz can be used to differentiate patients according to higher risk of sudden cardiac death.
