The molecular analysis of mtDNA gene for cyt b of 123 specimens form 24 localities revealed pronounced genetic diversity and structure of stone loach populations and confirmed an existence of several genetic lineages. Average sequence divergence reached 5.1–8% with divergence times estimated to be in the Tertiary. These lineages does not always form geographically well defined groups, therefore pattern of multiple populations with a history of long-term persistence and separation within the Danube basin is considered. The results support the importance of this river system for the survival of European fishes over the Pleistocene glacial period.

Molekulárna analýza sekvencií mitochondriálneho génu pre cytochróm b 123 jedincov z 24 lokalít odhalila hlbokú divergenciu a štruktúru v rámci populácií slíža dunajského povodia a potvrdila existenciu viacerých genetických línií. Hodnota divergencie dosiahla 5.1–8%, čo časovo zasahuje do obdobia Treťohôr.
