Western polecat (Mustela putorius) have disappeared from or declined in many countries of Europe during last 150 years. One of the possible causes could be interspecific competition for food with stone marten (Martes foina), especially during winter. Abundance of stone marten is increasing in the Czech Republic in the last 30 years.
