The bistriflate salt of racemic [5]helquat 1 was found to form a conglomerate. Based on this finding, the preferential crystallization of this chiral helicene–viologen hybrid was developed to deliver pure enantiomers on a 20 g scale (10.5 g of each enantiomer). To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest amount of nonracemic helicene-like compound obtained by preferential crystallization to date. The absolute configuration of the P enantiomer was confirmed by X-ray crystal structure analysis. The chromatography-free synthesis of racemic 1 on a multigram scale (30 g) is also presented as an entry point to this resolution study.

While the clean and weakly pinned samples help in a study of the elementary processes of flux dynamics in HTS,for applications is important the limit of strong pinning. In this paper is indicated that the increasing pinning disorder results in an increase of the peak height but at the same time in a decrease of the secondary peak position.

Palaeomagnetism and magnetostratigraphy of Karst sediments in Slovenia.

Intensive palaeomagnetic research in Slovenia has contributed substantially to the understanding of cave sediments in different tectonic and geomorphic settings in the territory. However results suggest that there were probably some distinct phases of masive deposition in caves. The podest one took place from about 1.8 to more than 5.4 ma (with two distinct phases at 1.8-3.6 and about 4.1-5.4 Ma). For the first time in Slovenia, biostratigraphic data helped to correlate magnetostratigraphy logs with the GPTS and to allocate the cave fill agens more precisely to pre-Quaternary times.

A short review of confocal stereology and three-dimensional image analysis is presented, pointing out the achievements accomplished in this field by the Department of Biomathematics (Institute of Physiology, Prague). One of the methods of confocal stereology, the fakir method for surface area estimation, developed by this laboratory, is described. Methods for automatic measurement of geometrical characteristics of microscopical structures, based on 3-D image processing or surface triangulation, are discussed and compared with interactive stereological methods. Three-dimensional reconstruction programs and software implementation of stereological and digital methods as well as their practical applications are presented

Stručný přehled stereologie a trojrozměrné analýzy obrazu v konfokální mikroskopii, dokumentovaný výsledky, získanými v oddělení biomatematiky Fyziologického ústavu AV ČR v Praze.
