Slavic National Epic in the Interpretative Network of Romantic Nationalism II

We cordially invite you to a workshop Slavic National Epic in the Interpretative Network of Romantic Nationalism II: Protagonists and practices coorganized by the Institute of Czech Literature of the CAS, Institute of Art History of the CAS and Bohemicum – Center for Czech Studies of the University of Regensburg on May 26th, 2023.

In 19th century Europe, the Nationalepos was not only a literary but also a political monument, and this dual interest in it was particularly evident among the protagonists of Slavic national movements. How did hitherto unknown or less prestigious texts such as The Tale of Igor’s Campaign, the Manuscript of Dvůr Králové, or the South Slavic epic enter the interpretive network of  European Romantic nationalism, what particular canonizing functions did they acquire in the 19th-century art, and what were the social effects of contemporary ideas about the epic? Participants will attempt to answer these and other questions by looking at the case of selected figures-mediators of the Romantic-nationalist discourse on Slavic epic in Europe and their practices.
