AnotaceThe aim of this paper is to investigate the removal efficiencies of components of the cellular organic matter (COM) produced by Microcystis aeruginosa during chemical water treatment (destabilization and subsequent aggregation of the COM particles). Standard jar tests with ferric sulphate as a destabilizing reagent were applied to treatment of raw water containing COM. Several methods (protein precipitation, resin fractionation technique and gel permeation chromatography) were used for characterization of COM components and for evaluation of removal efficiencies of individual fractions. It was found that high molecular proteins and hydrophobic substances (presumptively amines and neutral hydrocarbons and carbonyl compounds) were removed with very high efficiencies, while low molecular proteins and nonproteinous substances were removed with difficulties. Hydrophilic neutral substances (most likely polysaccharides) were not removable at all.
