Překlad anotace The book discusses the "discourse of transcience" and the relation to human finality. The author looks closely at the development of the said discourse over centuries, across cultures, literary and artistic genres, as a certain specific approach to the world. Using different examples, the book aims to illustrate how the elegiac discourse permeates not only the literature and the visual arts, but also the reality of today's urban setting with its inflation of "vain" objects, advertising, fashion, shop windows. The means and methods discussed serve, on the one hand, to express time and life seen and lived as frail and transient, as dreaming, on the other hand, it is in the context of this very same discourse that some works of art in some places give a hint to possibilities how the human condition - Heidegger's "being toward death" - can be overcome, transcended, how to experience eternity in the present moments.
