A modified extraction protocol was used to extract DNA from forest soil, compost and fresh earthworm faeces. DNA was amplified in a polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The products were analyzed using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) fingerprinting. Analysis of archaeal and bacterial DGGE fingerprints revealed that the diversity in both microbial domains increased after passage through the guts of E. andrei, but not E. fetida. Nevertheless, cluster and correspondence analyses revealed that the passage of soil and compost through the guts of E. fetida, E. andrei, respectively, had a significant effect on the composition of the archaea.
