DNA damage response activated by chronic subtoxic stresses leads to expression of cytokine encoding genes either primarily due to DNA damage activated kinases and/or secondarily through autocrine and paracrine effects of secreted cytokines, which activate network of cytokine-driven signaling pathways such as JAK/STAT. Changed gene expression pattern of senescent cells includes several tumor suppressors such as interferons, PML, STAT and IRF1. Intriguingly, persistent exposition of cells to conditioned media of chemotherapy-induced senescent cells is able to evoke premature senescence in neighbouring 'bystanding' cells.
