RBC suspensions were made by mixing constant volume of the washed control and treated RBC in isotonic physiological solution, Dextran 70 and polyethileneglycol (PEG) of different concentrations. A decrease in RBC deformability was achieved by treatment with glutaraldehyde (0.01–1.0%). The samples were measured under different transient flow regimes at low shear rates and at different local structure of flow. The dependences of the conductivity and the apparent viscosity on time and shear rates were studied in parallel with the changes in concentrations of Dextran 70, PEG and glutaraldehyde. The results show that the apparent viscosity and conductivity of RBC suspensions in Dextran 70 and PEG are strongly influenced by flow, shear rates and concentration and deformability of cells.
