Other species colonised once the ice disappeared (e.g. bank vole, Myodes glarolus), but by that stage there was only a land connection to Britain. There was a final phase of colonisation involving humans. They introduced mammals throughout the British Isles, at different times. The phylogeographic analyses help establish the source areas of those colonisations. In one case, the neolithic introduction of the common vole (Microtus arvalis) onto Orkney, ancient DNA techniques have been used to elucidate the colonisation process.
