When used in a distributed environment, the responsibility of connectors is to make the remote communication transparent to components. For this task, connectors often employ a kind of middleware. In this paper, we evaluate the feasibility of making the remote communication completely transparent. We consider middleware commonly used in today's enterprise systems, namely CORBA and RMI in Java. We point out issues that prevent the transparency and analyze the impact on components together with possible tradeoffs.
