Anotace	There are two ways of external forcing of the lower ionosphere: (1) Forcing of solar origin from above, namely variations of solar radiation including flares, and space weather including geomagnetic storms. (2) Forcing of atmospheric origin from below, namely atmospheric waves (planetary, tidal, gravity and infrasonic), and phenomena associated with lightning flashes (red sprites, blue jets etc.). A brief review of the lower ionosphere response to these forcing is presented.
