The action of GABA switches from depolarizing to hyperpolarizing by the postnatal day 7 due to the negative shift in chloride reversal potential. Furthermore, the expression pattern of the potassium-chloride-extruding cotransporter KCC2 was studied. The KCC2 protein expression in SBC increases after birth and KCC2 activity is attained at the end of the first postnatal week. KCC2 maintains low intracellular chloride concentration providing the hyperpolarizing GABAergic inhibition in SBC.
