In the early stage of succession, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) germinating form spores were not able to colonise the roots of so-called non-mycotrophic plants (from the families Chenopodiaceae and Brassicaceae). In contrast, the pre-developed mycelium network of AMF (representing the advanced stage of succession) colonised the roots of those plants and formed typical structures (arbuscules) of mycorrhizal symbiosis within their roots. The results suggest that the developed network of mycelium of AMF has an increased potential to colonise plants and is able to promote mycorrhiza even in plants with lower affinity to AMF.
