The parasite is a pathogen of the gypsy moth Lymantria dispar, important forest pest. The redescription, which is the prerequisite for the use of the organism as biological control agent, is based on structural, ultrastructural and molecular biology characters of a number of isolates of the parasite collected in numerous sites of occurrence of the host organism in the Central and Eastern Europe.
