Kniha Sociologie, veřejnost, politika představuje výběr z textů významného britského sociologa, jejichž sjednocujícím motivem je otázka povahy sociologického vědění. Kniha je rozdělena do dvou částí: první obsahuje texty, které se zaměřují na vývoj sociologického myšlení, druhá podává kritický výklad proměn současné akademické kultury. Ukazuje se zde, nakolik jsou aktuální problémy sociologie jakožto vědy spjaté s problémy současné společnosti. Její originalita spočívá v systematickém promýšlení vztahu sociologie–veřejnost jednak v širším rámci teoretických myšlenek, jednak v konfrontaci s dnešními nároky reforem vědy, výzkumu a vzdělávání.

This book collects a series of essays concerned with key concepts in sociological argument, as well as reflections about the contexts in which sociological arguments are produced and disseminated. In the first part, the essays address issues of structure and agency, power and partisanship, and criticism and engagement. In the second part, the essays reflect on the changing context of higher education and the shifting language of accountability, from professional responsibility to audit and the marketisation of higher education.
