In this study, the influence of proteinous substances produced by cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa on coagulation of hydrophobic kaolin particles was investigated. For this purpose, jar tests using ferric sulphate as a coagulant were carried out under different pH conditions. At pH 3.5 - 5.5, the efficient coagulation of both kaolin particles and proteins took place and polymer interactions were found to be a dominant coagulation mechanism. The character of the prevailing coagulation mechanism was strongly dependent on protein isoelectric points, zeta potential of kaolin particles and charge characteristics of hydrolysis products of coagulation agent. Through affinity chromatography analysis it was demonstrated that proteinous substances of MW 10, 8.4, 7.7, 6.5, 2.8 and 1 kDa formed complexes with iron at pH about 6.
