Some standardized developmental tests require children to provide definitions of words to test their vocabulary. The present study used the definitions children (N= 135) provided in the WPPSI vocabulary subtest to examine the structural aspect of their language, using the methods of language sample analysis. One goal, to test whether language productions collected during standardized tests could be used as language samples for spontaneous sample analysis. Secondly, the study aimed to test the validity of spontaneous language sample measures such as the Mean Length of Utterance (MLU) in Czech. The results suggest that language produced by children during standardized testing can be used for sample analysis, even though it is likely not as rich source as naturalistic conversation.
