Microcolumn separations, such as capillary liquid chromatography or capillary electrophoresis (CE) on-line combined with mass spectrometry (MS), fulfill requirements of high-resolution and sensitivity analyses of physiologically important compounds in complex mixtures of biological samples, body fluids or cell lysates. The essential part of CE-MS instrumentation is electrospray interface providing several functions: the transfer of analytes from the separation into the spray capillary, mixing with a spray liquid, pressure control of flow through the spray capillary and electrical potentials for CE separation and electrospray. It follows that the construction and optimization of the interface is not an easy task.
