Nowadays there are available several types of materials doped with laser active ions. Such materials can be both poly-crystalline and single-crystalline or amorphous. Lithium niobate doped with erbium ions is the well known material for the optical devices like amplifiers and lasers. There are two basic options how the lasing materials can be prepared: (i) bulk doping or (ii) localized doping occurring mainly on the surface of the un-doped bulk material. Though the bulk doping (i) is a rather common method, there are still some problems, as, e.g., poor homogeneity of the dopants distribution. Furthermore, for some utilization it is much better when the dopants are present only in a small and well defined area of the substrate, usually in the surface. Therefore the second option, the localized doping, will be the objective of the contribution. In this study two ways of erbium localized doping into various cuts of lithium niobate were used: ion implantation and thermal diffusion.
