The paper reports on examination of standard karyotypes in 10 species belonging to genera Rhinolophus and Hipposideros from western Africa and southern India. The karyotypes with 32, 36, 52, 56, 58, and 62 chromosomes were recorded among the studied species, with the rather stable number of autosomal arms (NFa = 60, 62, 64). The complements with 32 chromosomes seem similar between species of Rhinolophus and Hipposideros. The parallel pattern of chromosomal evolution may provide another support for a close phylogenetic relationship of the two families, and both the genera can be conceived as a single evolutionary unit in this respect.
