The results of this study confirm the findings of the previous molecular epidemiological study of female and male 1,3-butadiene (BD) exposed Czech workers, showing that females appeared to absorb or metabolize less BD per unit exposure conc. that did males (based on metabolite conc. in urine). In this study, another biomarker to measure a second metabolite of BD was used. The authors measured production and accumulation of the 1,2-dihydroxy-3,4-epoxybutane (EBD) metabolite as reflected in THB-Val hemoglobin adduct concentrations. In both the control and exposed groups mean THB-Val concentrations were significantly higher for males than females. It was also found that the size of difference increased with exposure.
