Conservation umbrellas are charismatic species, the conservation of which also conserves the high diversity of associated plants and animals. Phengaris [Maculinea] arion is a textbook example of a charismatic endangered invertebrate. While surveying its distribution at the westernmost outskirts of the Carpathians (Javorniky and Vsetinske Mts.), we investigated whether occupied sites differed from unoccupied ones in the composition of vascular plants and butterfly assemblages. The occupied sites were small pastures, including abandoned ones, with S to W exposure, displaying a high microtopographic heterogeneity. Their vegetation was characteristic for non-intensive submountain pasture, butterfly assemblages were species richer, contained more specialised species, and significantly higher proportion of red-listed species. The conservation of P. arion sites thus provides umbrella for a high number of species associated with traditional land use.

Deštníkové druhy jsou charismatické organismy, jejichž ochrana může zachránit mnoho dalších druhů sdílejících obdobné stanovištní nároky. Modrásek černoskvrnný je učebnicovým příkladem charismatického motýla. Při sledování jeho populací na nejzápadnějších výběžcích karpatského oblouku (ve moravských Javorníkách a Vsetínských vrších) jsme si položili otázku, zda se modráskem osídlené luční pozemky lišily od pozemků neosídlených ve výskytu ostatních motýlů a vyšších rostlin. Osídlené plochy byly typicky drobné pastviny, včetně opuštěných, s J či Z expozicí a vysoce heterogenním reliéfem. Hostily charakteristickou vegetaci podhorských pastvin, více druhů motýlů a více specializovaných ohrožených motýlů než plochy neosídlené. Ochrana lokalit m. černoskvrnného tak může poskytnou deštník řadě dalších druhů asociovaných s tradičním hospodařením člověka v krajině.
