Cieľom príspevku je informovať širšiu odbornú a jaskyniarsku verejnosť o syndróme bieleho nosa (WNS), závažnom ochorení netopierov, ktoré sa šíri naprieč Severnou Amerikou a Európou, upozorniť na možné riziká a poskytnúť praktické rady, čo robiť v prípade pozorovania jedincov s podozrením na plesňovú infekciu a návštevy postihnutých lokalít.

White-nose syndrome is a disease manifesting as a skin infection of hibernating bats that was first discovered in the USA in 2006 (Blehert et al., 2009) and the infectious agent was later found also in Europe (Puechmaille et al., 2010). The disease aflicts bat’s health, fitness and behavior during hibernation in ways that might lead to death. It is caused most likely by a newly described fungal species Geomyces destructans (Gargas et al., 2009). One of the key problems is that our ability to effectively control and manage the disease in wildlife is limited. In Europe, bats affected with geomycosis, infection of G. destructans, survive better than in North America and no mass mortality or population decline attributable to geomycosis have been reported to date. Key research questions should be aimed at finding the reasons for the difference in consequences of geomycosis between different species and regions. Visitors to the underground should excercise caution and follow stringent decontamination protocols to prevent further spread or repeated introductions of the white-nose syndrome fungus.
