Kniha představuje poprvé v ucelené podobě vývoj nejvýznamnějších humanitních oborů na Německé univerzitě v Praze v období první republiky a za německé okupace. Na základě archivních materiálů, odborné literatury a interpretace dobových textů historiků, germanistů a slavistů působících na univerzitě zkoumá autor dějiny těchto oborů v kontextu vědeckého, politického a kulturního vývoje českých zemí v první polovině dvacátého století i v rámci vývoje této vrcholné vědecké a kulturní instituce Němců v českých zemích. Kniha se tedy hlásí k široce pojatým dějinám vědy, které si všímají nejenom institucionální a personální stránky vývoje jednotlivých oborů, ale i jejich tematických a metodologických proměn v širších historických souvislostech.

The book focuses on the last three decades of the German University existence in Prague. In this period it became one of Czechoslovak universities and, following March 1939, also a German Reich university. The work concentrates on the development of three fields of study at the university: historiography, Germanic and Slavonic studies and represents, first of all, contribution to the less explored chapters of the German minority’s science in Czech lands. Science, research and academic pursuits, however, are not followed only for documentary interests. The author intended to perceive science as a certain important social, cultural and political activity. The book is dealing with the analysis of institutional, political, discoursive and personal conditions and prerequisites of development of academic fields of study at the German University in the interwar period and during the German occupation.
