Since 2006, when regulations enforcing lead-free solders were implemented into the EU legislation, there is an ongoing drive to find the best lead-free alternatives. It turns out that there is no single replacement, which would cover all technical applications. Melting temperature of solder is of the primary concern for both economical and technological reasons. The melting point of bulk silver (as an example of low-toxic material) is 962 °C, which is far too high even in a category of high-temperature solders (defined by Tm ł 230 °C and limited by 350 °C due to polymer materials used in electronic industry). However, the effect of lowering melting point of powders with decreasing particle size can be turned to advantage in this case. We have synthesized a silver nanopowder. We have prepared model joints and studied the nanopowder sintering and local mechanical properties.
