Chlorophyll (Cab), a green foliar pigment, is one of the most important organic molecules involved in the photosynthetic processes. Cab absorbs and converts energy of incoming solar radiation into macro energetic chemical bonds. The amount of foliar chlorophyll pigments is dependent on the Ieve! of actual physiological stress, therefore, overall concentration of Cab can be used as a proxy of vegetation health status. Mountainous and boreal coniferous forests represent ones of the most frequent terrestrial ecosystems of the Northem hemisphere. According to the Forest Management Institute of the Czech Republic, Norway spruce (Picea abies (L). Karst.) occupies a!most one half of the overall forested area of the country. For these reasons, this work aims on development of the methodology for retrieval and validation of Cab concentrations of N. spruce crowns from hyperspectral CHRIS I PROBA (C/P) satellite data (European Space Agency - ESA, 2006), using coupled PROSPECT and three-dimensionalDiscrete Anisotropy Radiative Transfer (DAR1) model (Cesbio, France). The retrieved Cab values are validated against Cab values retrieved from AISA Eagle (Specim, Finland) aerial hyperspectral data of very high spatial resolution.
