In this paper the kinetic electron emission spectra from Al and from Au bombarded by Na ions are compared.The spectra from Al are due to Auger electrons from excited Al ions and due to electrons emitted from the valence band of Al, whereas in the case of Au the electrons are emitted only from the Au valence band. The comparison of the spectra helps to clarify several aspects of hitherto not fully understood kinetic electron emission from solids.
