The paper is focused on aerodynamic characteristics of the tip section of a steam turbine last stage rotor blade with an active span 1220 mm (48”). Steel blades were designed for the speed of 3000 rpm, an outlet cross section of 11.9 m2 and a curved axial entry dovetail root. The tip cascade is aerodynamically highly loaded with supersonic outlet flow at design of M = 1.6. CFD simulations with a Navier-Stokes code were used to design the flow structure. Test investigations in a high speed aerodynamic wind tunnel were performed and compared with tip cascade flow structure calculation. The experimental data obtained by use of optical and pneumatic methods provide information about the pressure distribution around airfoil. Losses and other integral characteristics of the cascade exit flow were measured pneumatically. The results of calculations are compared with measured flow structures and pressure distribution around the airfoil in dependence on incidence airfoil angle.
