The present contribution is focused on the determination of differences in soil water regime at two sites at the forested Liz experimental basin: one covered by Norway spruce (Picea abies) and second by European beech (Fagus sylvatica). The twenty-two-year dataset (2000‒2021) of measured soil water potentials was analysed and a bucket-type soil water balance model was used to investigate the differences in evapotranspiration and percolation. Based on the long-term soil water potential measurements, four categories of differences between beech and spruce canopy have been determined. Generally, the drier the summer season was, the higher were the differences with drier soil found under beech canopy.
