Creep response of ex-service austenitic steel was investigated at temperatures from 470 to 550°C and stresses from 80 to 120 MPa. The conditions lead to very low strain rates. Helicoid spring specimen technique and improved conventional creep tests were used to record very low creep strains. Results were compared to creep curves obtained on the new steel of the same type under the same conditions. The creep behaviour of the ex-service steel was very similar to that of the new steels. No creep damage or considerable change of microstructure was detected during the service period of 65/,000/,hours. The helicoid spring specimen technique provides results compatible with that of conventional creep tests, but with superior accuracy with very low creep strains. The data can also be used in some special cases, where the creep strain itself is limiting the creep life of the part rather than creep failure.
