n 1976 J. Heasley and D. Mihalas published a seminal paper devoted to the modeling of solar prominences. They applied their stellar atmospheric code based on the novel complete linearization method to model the radiation-magnetohydrostatic (RMHS) coupling in prominences, to solve the multilevel transfer problem for a mixture of hydrogen and helium and to investigate the prominence energy balance. Their results served as a benchmark for future developments in this field and today, 33 years after that, we would like to show how significantly they influenced the current research. With the link to this pioneering work, we will discuss recent progress in the RMHS modeling of solar prominences, focused on multidimensional/multithread radiative transfer, coupling of non-LIE transfer to MHS, the importance of partial redistribution for interpreting strong UV lines etc. New light was shed recently on the issues of energy balance, again having a direct link to the 1976 paper.
