We applied ABA either to the last subculture (3 weeks; 10 mM ABA) or as single application (50 mM ABA) immediately after ex vitro transfer of tobacco plantlets. Transplanted plants were grown either under low (LI) or high (HI) irradiance of 150 and 700 mmol m-2 s-1, respectively. Endogenous content of ABA increased considerably after ABA application. Stomatal conductance, transpiration rate and net photosynthetic rate decreased considerably by ABA application and wilting of these plants was limited. Water use efficiency markedly increased due to ABA application. Chlorophyll a+b content was higher in ABA-treated plants. While long-term ABA application mainly decreased content of xanthophylls, short-term application decreased particularly degree of their deepoxidation. Both long-term and short-term applications of ABA improved acclimatization of in vitro grown plants to ex vitro conditions.
