The effect of arbuscular mycorrhiza on the interaction of large plants and seedlings was studied in a model early succession situation. Whereas the large plants, which were planted first, showed, as expected, positive mycorrhizal growth response, the seedlings, which were planted later, where inhibited in their growth by mycorrhiza. This inhibition was caused by nitrogen depletion in a larger area around the large plants and demonstrates an important aspect of the mycorrhizal effects in plant-plant interactions.
