The selected ion flow tube technique was used to quantify breath acetone, ammonia, ethanol, isoprene and methanol whilst fasting and in response to feeding. Six normal volunteers were fasted for twelve hours, and after obtaining baseline breath samples, were fed a liquid protein-calore meal, to provide 0.47g/kg of protein (Fortisip). Further breath samples were obtained at 20, 40 and 60 minutes, and then hourly for a further five hours. Breath acetone concentrations decreased and ammonia increased.
